We ask that your tips include practical ideas that most everyone can use, from shopping to budgeting, by means of simple actions that may help others save more and spend wisely!

To start, America's Family Financial Expert Ellie Kay offers a few tips and suggestions...

  • Soup and Slender Savings – To save money on grocery costs, consider instituting a soup and bread night or a baked potato night once a week. My kids really love these nights! Your family doesn’t have to eat meat every single evening and the lighter fare will lighten your food bill as well.
  • Cooking in Bulk – One of our favorite casseroles is chicken spaghetti and my kids don’t have to know it—but it’s a value meal as well. The pasta stretches the chicken and I save money. When I make it, I always make a double batch and freeze one for later. Then on a night when I tempted to grab something at a fast food restaurant because I just don’t feel like cooking, I pull the casserole out of the freezer instead. By cooking in bulk and making “two at once” I save our family $20 by eating at home.
  • Change Chump Change Into Savings. These tips are helping you save a chunk of change but too much change can be heavy may even break your wallet, like it did on mine once! But change can also be valuable. If you throw your extra coins into a jar on the counter in your kitchen and then add another dollar or two to the collection every day, you could easily come up with an extra $100 a month to deposit into your savings account.

  • We recycle aluminum soda cans and then redeem them periodically for cash at our local recycling center. This not only teaches our children about protecting the environment, but also teaches them financial responsibility as well.

  • When I go into town, I combine several trips into one outing that are near each other. That way I'm saving time and gas.

  • Instead of spending so much money on paper towels, I find dish towels at yard sales for $.05 to $.10 a piece, bring them home, wash them, cut them in 4 pieces and use them for cleaning and spills. Then I throw them in the washing machine and reuse.

  • Where possible, dry your clothes on a clothesline or rack. When you do need to use the dryer, place a dry towel in with the wet clothes to cut the time it takes to dry the clothes.
